In today’s America, the racially fraught past is very close. Sonny’s Dad, who left the family when Sonny was a teen, is back. He’s ill, descending into dementia. Sonny struggles to come to terms with his life growing up with a mother who wanted to shape him into a model “black strong man”, while she was considered white. How is our identity shaped and where do we find the truth that matters?
