Sight Unseen
Performed: - 2 W 64th St, New York, NY 10023, Apr 21 - Apr 22, 2024
Category: Readings
Highly successful painter Jonathan Waxman, on a trip to London for his first gallery opening abroad, visits his old love. Patricia, now an archeologist, lives in the English countryside with her husband Nick. Underneath the surface of an awkward reunion simmer long festering resentments, regrets, and anger. Then there is the art. How much does Jonathan owe his success to Patricia, who he rejected while her being instrumental in his finding his voice as an artist? What does “success” for an artist truly mean and look like?
“You mean there are people on Park Avenue or in Tokyo who have walls in their living rooms especially reserved for the latest Waxman, Number 238?. . .these poor, unsuspecting — rather, rich unsuspecting–patrons of the arts have bought, sight unseen, a painting you have not yet painted?”
Reading series of the NY Society for Ethical Culture, NYC, followed by a moderated discussion of the pertinent themes raised in the play.
